Stairs, shopping bags and 3.4 minutes a day

A wrist-tracker study of 13,018 women who did not exercise. Short vigorous bursts were linked to a 45% lower risk of heart events.

Women who did no formal exercise but logged about three and a half minutes a day of vigorous everyday activity had a 45 percent lower risk of major cardiovascular events than women who logged none. That finding comes from a study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, published online in October 2024.

The data came from UK Biobank participants, average age sixty-one, who wore a wrist activity tracker around the clock for a week. This analysis looked at 13,018 women and 9,350 men who reported no leisure-time exercise, followed for nearly eight years.

The researchers call it VILPA, vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity. Think bursts of up to about a minute, like brisk stair climbing or carrying heavy shopping.

In women, about 3.4 minutes a day, the typical amount in the study, was linked to a 45 percent lower risk of any major cardiovascular event. Heart attack risk was 51 percent lower and heart failure risk 67 percent lower.

These figures rest on a few hundred events, so the true effect could be noticeably smaller or larger. Even about 1.6 minutes a day was linked to a 30 percent lower overall risk.

In men, the associations were weaker and not statistically clear.

Be clear about what this is. It is observational, so it shows an association, not proof that the bursts caused the drop.

Women who were already healthier may simply have been more able to move vigorously. The health questionnaires were also filled in about five and a half years before the tracker week, though the activity itself was measured by a device rather than by memory.

Here is the move. Find three or four moments in your day to go hard for thirty to sixty seconds.

Take the stairs at a pace that leaves you breathing heavily at the top. Carry the shopping instead of wheeling it, and walk the last block briskly enough that a full sentence is hard.

If you have a heart condition, get chest pain on exertion or have been told to limit effort, ask your doctor before adding vigorous bursts.

This does not replace lifting or structured cardio when you can do them. It is the floor, and this data suggests the floor matters.

Three and a half minutes, spread across a day you are already living. Count your stairs today.
